Finally, The Subways are performing “Rock & Roll Queen” and “Oh Yeah” live at the Bait Shop. Josh, Stephanie and I heard the band over the summer and just fell in love with the album and the single “Rock & Roll Queen”. I took my copy to the Midwest Music Conference in Indianapolis so I could check it out and rattled nearly every window in the Hampstead House playing it over and over on my laptop (this is an old-school album that should be enjoyed good and loud). While at the conference, I also took in awesome shows by the Ponies, The Dead 60’s and Louis XIV with my friend Jonathan Palmer who manages The Start and participated in some Film/TV panels about music licensing. Anyway, by the time I got back to LA, we started making plans to bring The Subways to The O.C. 9000 phone calls about visas, backline and song clearance later-- the band arrived for their first ever stateside visit as a band with management, label and publishers in tow and put on one hell of a show. We also use “I Want To Hear What You Have Got To Say” to underscore the end of the episode. On The Stereo: The Films, Rock Kills Kid, Electric President, Goldspot, The Darkness and Starsailor

It has been a busy fall in The O.C. Music Department…. We are anticipating the release of Music From The O.C. Mix 5 on Tuesday November 8. The soundtrack includes some of our favorite bands (Imogen Heap, LCD Soundsystem, Of Montreal and Sweden’s The Shout Out Louds) and also some tracks created especially for the show and the album. Phantom Planet took some time out this summer to re-record a low-key rendition of “California” with handclaps and whistles added. Youth Group also recorded a cover for us – a version of Alphaville’s early 80’s hit “Forever Young”. The song was selected by Josh Schwartz to be Ryan and Marissa’s song and we thought Youth Group would be the perfect band to do an “O.C.” cover. The band got on the phone with Epitaph’s Brett Gurwitz, manager Andy Castle (also manages Jet featured on Music From The O.C. Mix 1) Executive Producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage and yours truly. We talked about the scene that the song was to score and how the song should feel with Youth Group’s signature genius of course. Death Cab For Cutie’s Chris Walla (who turned me on to the band last Spring) produced and mixed the song in his Seattle studio and for that we thank him. Look out for The Subways live at the Bait Shop soon (more about that in Liner Notes #14).

On The Stereo: The Guillemots, The Subways, Calla, Tom Vek, Nightmare Of You, Wolf Parade, Holidays on Ice and Broken Social Scene.

I can’t believe the season is almost over – only a few episodes left to air and then we go on hiatus until after the 4th Of July. Production has already wrapped, but the Post-Production department is still finishing up the last two episodes. Listen for some as-yet-unreleased songs (beautiful tracks by Coldplay and Imogen Heap) in major emotional moments.

The Chop Shop (me, Andrea, Andy and Angie) Producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage as well as some of the cast all ventured out to the desert to the now practically famous Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio. So many great bands, such short but great performances. Highlights for me were seeing the Gang Of Four (first American performance with the original lineup since 1981), Snow Patrol, The Raveonettes, Arcade Fire, Rilo Kiley and Kasabian. Parking, weather and the dreaded bathroom situation were all vastly improved this year and I didn’t see any arrests…

Luckily, summer concert season is upon us and some of the bands that I missed at the festival are coming to town soon. I am especially looking forward to Spoon, The Dears, And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of The Dead, The Pixies, Athlete, Pinback and Ray Lamontagne.

On The Stereo: Ryan Adams, World Leader Pretend, Hyper, Gang Of Four, The Go! Team, Caufield, Mainline, The Redwalls

I visited my local record store today and had the pleasure of seeing mix 4 on the racks. Listen for the Futureheads track "Decent Days and Nights" in next week's episode, The Rager.

We have had a lot of on-camera activity on the show lately. You might have heard that Death Cab For Cutie is finally going to be appearing live on the show in The O.C. Confidential (airs April 21). Death Cab taped the show on March 2nd right before leaving town to record their new Atlantic release on the east coast. Josh and I (and the cast, crew and about 100 extras) were lucky enough to catch "The Sound of Settling," "Title & Registration" and "A Movie Script Ending" performed at the Bait Shop. The band was awesome (naturally) and joined by Jordan Kurland of Zeitgest Management and Josh Rosenfeld of Barsuk. FYI...Chris Walla produced the new Decemberists album - out in stores now and really breathtaking...

On The Stereo: Love As Laughter, Hot Hot Heat, Shout Out Louds, Havergal, The Koreans, Crooked Fingers

The Mallpisode or 'Beckisode' as our 15th episode of The O.C. is affectionately known around the production office is finally about to air. Late last fall, Interscope's Tony Seyler came down to the cutting room and played us a few cuts of Beck's new work in progress (eventually to be titled Guero. We were so taken with the tracks (and are such HUGE Beck fans in general) that Josh thought it would be cool to spotlight/integrate a number of cuts in an upcoming episode. He and Co-Exec Producer Stephanie Savage were able to listen to un-mastered versions of the songs and include "Girl," "E-Pro," "Que Ondo Guero," "Scarecrow," "Missing" and a Daniel Johnston cover "True Love Will Find You In The End" in The Mallpisode. Many, many thanks to John Silva and Gabby Skolnek from Silva Artist Management and Interscope's Tony Seyler for all of their help in making our "Beckisode" possible.

On The Stereo: Low, Efterklang, Bloc Party, Hot Hot Heat, Death Cab For Cutie (Live), Love As Laughter, Jackie Green.

I am really looking forward to the release of Music From The O.C. Mix 4 – coming soon on April 5. As usual, it was so difficult for Josh and I to narrow down the song selects to the final track listing– we found ourselves with about 20 “have to have” tracks for the CD and 12 spots to fill. A number of the soundtrack songs have already aired this season. A.C. Newman’s “On The Table” played while Seth and Ryan discuss Caleb’s arrest, “Fortress” by Pinback can be heard in The New Era while Seth and Ryan are hanging out in the Harbor Quad and Imogen Heap’s “Goodnight and Go” was used thematically in The Sno C. Modest Mouse’s performance of “The View” live at the Bait Shop is also included on the mix. Look out for matt pond PA’s version of “Champagne Supernova” in The Rainy Day Woman. Josh Schwartz decided on the Oasis track for this particular moment in the show early last winter and we were thrilled when Matt was able to go into the studio and record the seven minute cover (with and without rain) in the beginning of January. If you haven’t had a chance to check the Wintersongs EP, run don’t walk to get it… Also featured in upcoming episodes are “Decent Days and Nights” by the Futureheads and “Scarecrow”, a track off the upcoming Beck release Guero.

On The Stereo: Spoon, LCD Soundsystem, Caesars, Daft Punk, Damien Jurado, The Kingdom Flying Club and Queens of The Stone Age.

It’s almost the end of January and I spent a lot of time over the holidays perusing “Best CD’s of 2004” and “Top Ten” Lists provided by my favorite magazines, websites, radio stations and record stores. Because of my job as music supervisor on The O.C., I am able to collaborate with Josh Schwartz and the other exec producers and place some of my favorite bands in the show.

The Chop Shop Music Supervision staff …Andrea von Foerster, Andy Gowan, Angela Correa and I put together a list of our 50 favorite albums of last year. In no particular order, the following is a list of bands we licensed or we wanted to license last year.

Congrats to Arthur Yoria for winning the Enter The Mix contest. His track “Call Me” is simply beautiful and we can’t wait to place it in an upcoming episode. Check out his website for other cool tracks.

We have been really busy working on upcoming episodes of the show and listening through the submissions in overflowing mailbox. Since the O.C. is airing internationally – (England, Australia, Spain etc), my staff and I are now getting great indie rock submissions from fans all over the world. 13 Senses (England), Infusion (Australia), Bell x1 (Ireland) and Flunk (Iceland) have gotten a lot of office airplay lately…

Aside from live shows at The Bait Shop, I have been able to catch some live shows in the LA area. Death Cab For Cutie and Franz Ferdinand were genius as usual and I’m looking forward to Blue Merle, Phoenix and The Album Leaf.

On The Stereo: Louis XIV, Ofer, Eagles Of Death Metal, Flunk, Head Automatica, Earlimart, Mark Lanegan Band, matt pond PA

Although the new season is just about to start airing in November (and I can’t wait), my staff and I have been focusing on a variety of O.C. Music projects all summer long.

The show has built a beautiful new set this year called “The Bait Shop” – a truly amazing two- story club/music venue (merch booth, bar, balcony, private rooms and all) where Seth, Summer, Marissa and Ryan will be gathering to see some live bands. We have already booked and shot four bands at the club. The Walkmen kicked off our Bait Shop series, flying in from their East Coast tour dates. In subsequent episodes, The Bait Shop has also hosted The Killers, Modest Mouse and The Thrills (these bands also flew in to tape the show between live dates). The recording artists, labels, and management companies have been great to work with, making the complex task of bringing live music to screen really smooth.

Another big part of the summer was spent reviewing the outpouring of submissions to the Enter The Mix context- Josh Schwartz and I (and The Chop Shop staff) listened to so many inspired tracks by so many cool artists that it was difficult to narrow down the field to the final five. I’m really looking forward the winner being announced so that we can finally place it in The O.C.

On The Stereo: Olympic Hopefuls, Elliott Smith, Rilo Kiley, A.C. Newman, Thirteen Senses, Mascott

A group of us from The O.C. were able to kick off our summer hiatus by caravaning to the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival in Indio, CA. In spite of the crazy heat and crowds, the bands were simply amazing. On Saturday we caught excellent sets by Death Cab For Cutie, The Desert Sessions and Beck. That night we saw The Pixies’ historic reunion show (they sounded better than ever) and the always genius Radiohead. On Sunday, we went from stage to stage and were able to hear Belle and Sebastian, Bright Eyes, Air, BRMC and The Flaming Lips. All awesome, but the sound got a little wanky on the main stage as the day wore on. I am really looking forward to listening to all of the submissions for the Enter The Mix Contest. We have already had a great response and are expecting to hear some really cool tracks. On The Stereo: Muse, Bright Eyes featuring Neva Dinova, The Pixies, The Streets, The Like Young, The Decemberists

I can’t believe that the season is coming to a close, 27 episodes have flown by and we are almost finished working on the season finale (airing in the beginning of May). I am so incredibly pleased about Jem’s cover of the Paul McCartney classic, “Maybe I’m Amazed”. She recorded the track in London specifically for this episode and will be performing it on the show. 2003-2004 has been such a fantastic year for new releases (major label, indie label, international) that I wanted mention some of the perpetual favorites at The Chop Shop (myself and assistants Andy, Andrea and Natalie). We were able to place some of these bands in the show… “The Rivals” included - The New Amsterdams, The Thrills, and Clinic. “The Nana” used new cuts from Modest Mouse and Aqualung and we licensed “Summertime” by The Fire Theft in “The Truth”. Look out for Franz Ferdinand, Jonathan Rice and Iron & Wine in the last part of the season. New releases we love but didn’t get to use – Get Up Kids, Jucifer, Air, Matt Pond PA, The Walkmen, The Von Bondies and The Shins. Thanks for all of the song suggestion input on the boards. Cool Stuff!

Liner Notes #3 - Josh Schwartz

Hey… so this is my first entry into the liner notes and I’m excited anyone out there cares enough to read this…we’re right in the middle of shooting the last episode of the show which I’m really excited about. We have one of our best directors, Patrick Norris (“The Goodbye Girl”, “The Heights”) at the helm and all the actors are really delivering amazing performances… Just got back from Vegas where we shot the second to last episode and it’s a lot of fun; just your typical Vegas bachelor party with hookers, pimps and off strip gambling (Seth and Ryan – what mischief will they make next…) We’ll be premiering the Beastie Boys new song on that episode which is a huge honor, since they’re such an amazing band and don’t license their music very often… Hope all of you have picked up your OC Mix 1, I’m really proud of it and how representative of the show it truly is… On tonight’s episode, “The Proposal”, you’ll notice the final image of the show mirrors the cover of the cd. I just loved that photo of the four kids in bed together and after seeing it really wanted to write a moment like that into the show… the final song is Highwater Risings “Pillows and Records” and it’s a beautiful haunting song that I think really captures the mood of the episode and what all the characters are going through. That’s really the main goal of the music on the show; to allow you into the hearts and minds of the characters… Well, gotta run to set but I hope you like tonight’s episode… and thanks for watching, listening, reading…

Liner Notes #3 - Alexandra Patsavas

One of my favorite projects as a music supervisor is creating a new song (or version of a song) for a specific scripted scene. While he was still writing “The Goodbye Girl,” Josh gave me a call and asked for some ideas for the end of the episode… the classic emotional goodbye song. I pitched some tracks, mostly concentrating on new releases and just couldn’t find the perfect one. Josh and Stephanie Savage came back with the OMD’s “If You Leave” from Pretty In Pink and we had our song. The next challenge was putting together a short list of bands that would “get” the material and also fit in with the show’s sound. After listening to Nada Surf’s Barsuk release Let Go on auto repeat (especially the breathtaking “Inside Of Love”), we knew we had the perfect artist. Serendipitously, Nada Surf was in the Barsuk recording studio finishing up their new album and were available and into the concept. After a couple of conference calls including Matthew Caws (Nada Surf), Josh Schwartz, Josh Rosenfeld (Barsuk), Ben Weber (Manager) and myself to discuss the actual scene the track would underscore, the feeling we were hoping to achieve, and the licensing nitty-gritty… the band went into the studio with Chris Walla (Death Cab For Cutie) producing. Needless to say, we are thrilled with the track and the way it works under picture in “The Goodbye Girl.” Look for “If You Leave” on Music From The OC: Mix 2. On The Stereo: The Killers, The Owls, Just Jack, Volcano,I’m Still Excited!

Liner Notes #2 - Alexandra Patsavas

“The L.A.” is one of my favorite episodes of The O.C. and proved to be a really interesting show to supervise. We were able to use a lot of music – including catalog, current releases and some demo masters. Josh Schwartz scripted both The Vines’ new single “Ride” to play as Seth & Ryan find Julie Cooper & Luke together at the Mermaid and Jude’s “Out of L.A.” as Summer, Seth, Ryan and Marissa walk along the strip – loved how these worked with picture. We tried a lot of tracks in the first Luna-Chicks scene and ultimately agreed that “Born Too Slow” by the Crystal Method and “Road Where It Leads Where It Led” by The Secret Machines felt great for an L.A. club. Editor Norman Buckley went with“Start A Fire” by one of my favorite bands, Radio 4, to be background at Luna-Chicks as well. Rounding out the club selects are songs by Timo Maas and brand new Scandinavian rapper K-Dub. Asian Man recording artists The Plus Ones displayed a great sense of humor and allowed their song “All The Boys” to be gently mocked by Seth as Grady and Summer listened to Grady’s tune. TV episodes with multiple club scenes can be a challenge…Creatively, I felt like we took some chances musically and didn’t rely on the same ol’ thing.

On the stereo this week: The Webb Brothers, Trespassers William, Iron & Wine, The Walkmen

Liner Notes #1 - Alexandra Patsavas

My job as the Music Supervisor for The O.C. has to be one of the best music gigs in television. I get to work on a great show with producers who are huge music fans and like to stretch with new bands and unexpected choices.

Music Supervision is a lot more than a cool music collection full of b-sides and imports. On this TV show it is about working closely with Josh Schwartz and the producers to find a sound that defines the show. I listen to lots and lots of new releases (and demos and catalog), work closely with the producers, writers, directors and editors on each episode to find tracks for specific emotional moments and for specific physical situations. Sometimes those songs are scripted by the writer and work perfectly from the beginning (Finley Quaye and William Orbit’s “Dice” used at the end of “The Countdown” comes to mind) and sometimes the final song selection gets chosen after many rounds of pitches and ideas. And then there is the licensing part of the job – panicking like crazy to get all the necessary legal clearance work done on time and hopefully on budget. Many, many publishers, lawyers, and record company folks are involved in this process.

I’m so excited about the music we use on the show and that is on Music From The O.C. Mix 1. Hopefully you are hearing music that you already love and new bands that catch your ear.

On the stereo this week: Jem - The Secret Machines – Halloween, Alaska - Nada Surf – Franz Ferdinand

Josh Schwartz

(Creator/Executive Producer)

Josh Schwartz is the creator and executive producer of this year’s breakthrough Fox show, The O.C. At 27, Schwartz is the youngest person in network history to create and run the day to day production of a network series. Over the past months, Schwartz has been nominated for a Writers Guild Award, with the show being nominated for a Peoples Choice Award, as well as being named “Guilty Pleasure of the Year” by VH1.

Schwartz is passionate about music and has made the selection of artists featured on The O.C. one of his main areas of focus. In January, the band Rooney performed on the show with the result catapulting sales of their most recent CD 200% in the following week. He is often given other cutting edge bands a big push, featuring music from Death Cab for Cutie, Black Eyed Peas, Bright Eyes, Jet and Spoon, and Finley Quay with a significant increase in radio airplay following each band’s appearance. In March, Warner Brothers Records released the season one soundtrack.

Josh Schwartz career as a screenwriter was launched when he was a junior at USC and sold his first screenplay to Columbia. The script garnered Schwartz many fans around town and quickly opened doors in television and film. His 2000 pilot Brookfield was produced for ABC, and the pilot Wall to Wall Records followed in 2001 for the WB/Warner Bros. His next sale put The O.C. on the air.

The son of toy inventors, Schwartz was raised in Providence, Rhode Island with his younger brother and sister. He currently resides in Los Angeles, and is an active member in both the Writers and Producers Guild.

Check out Josh Schwartz's top 20 songs:

Some of these songs are my favorites of all time (Bob Dylan, Jeff Buckley, Police, John Lennon, Springsteen, Radiohead), some are great songs by great bands (Oasis, Cars, Talking Heads, Clash, Stones) and some are tied to memories (Seger, Alphaville)... all I need to hear is Guns N' Roses "Patience" and I'm back in 7th grade at this party in someone's basement, where that song comes on, all the kids around me immediately know to start making out, and I stand there, alone, understanding for the first time the power music has to bring people together....

(in no particular order):
Police -- "So Lonely"
Shins -- "The Silhouttes"
Jeff Buckley - "Just Like A Woman"
Rolling Stones -- "Beast of Burden"
Talking Heads -- "Life During Wartime"
Highwater Rising -- "Pillows and Records"
Bob Seger -- "Night Moves"
Clash -- "Train in Vain"
Oasis -- "Live Forever"
Cure -- "Close to Me"
Smashing Pumpkins -- "To Sheila"
Pixies -- "Here Comes Your Man"
Bruce Springsteen -- "The River"

Bob Dylan -- "Don't Think Twice It's Alright"
Guns N Roses -- "Patience"
Wilco -- "Heavy Metal Drummer"
